Wishes In The Dark
Chapter 1
August 7, 2051. 9 am, a quarter to ten. The sun rose like a great ball of fire. Sweats on the forehead. Some tedious wheezing. Voices that complain. Tired eyes and choked lungs. It was too hot for her to bare, but the old man, Mr. Aloff, was watering his plants in the back yard while whistling as if he didn't mind the heat of the sun.
His grandson, young Dando, looked up at Mr. Aloff and closed his left eye as the water splashed into his eye. "Aren't you tired, grandpa?" asked the innocent child. “You've been here for about ... thirty minutes? It's too hot, you see. "
The old man just laughed at his grandson and patted Dando's head. "Your grandma will be mad if I leave her flowers thirsty under the sun, you know how mad she will be when ..."
"But grandpa?"
"Yes, son?"
Dando thinned his lips for a second before answering. "Grandma is already dead and - and you knew that ..."
"Oh."
That was the greatest downfall of any heart. The boy did not know that his grandfather had Alzheimer's disease. He had forgotten that his wife died of breast cancer 3 years ago. The thought came in his head that brought tears to every corner of his eye.
"I am. . ." The boy got nervous when he saw the look on his grandfather's face. "I'm sorry, Grandpa. I didn't mean it that way."
"Oh, son," the old man muttered. “Don't worry too much. Go in now, I'll follow you later.
The boy didn't want to leave his grandfather in the back yard. He thought about his grandfather's health, he was too old to stay in the sun. The boy did not want to lose his grandfather, but he obeyed the old man.
Mr. Aloff noticed that his grandson was leaving him in front of the plants and let his tears fall. At that moment a mysterious man came towards him. On the other side of the fence the man spoke. "Good morning mylord?"
Mr. Aloff looked up and blinked away his tears. "Oh, good morning. How can I help you?" he asked politely and stepped closer to the fence where the man in the black suit was standing.
"I just want to take a survey, Mr ...?"
"Aloff. Joaquin Aloff, ”he introduced himself. "Yes sir?" He tried to catch a glimpse of the paper the man was holding, then looked up at the man's face. Mr. Aloff did not recognize him because he was wearing a black mask.
He might be an ordinary survivor - but his aura was mysterious and dark. Something in him made Mr. Aloff frown.
"Let me just ask you a few questions, Mr. Aloff," said the man in the black suit, looking at his papers. "What do you prefer, day or night?" asked the madman without hesitation.
Mr. Aloff thought for a moment when he heard the question. He looked up at the blue sky and his thoughts flew everywhere. He remembered the unforgettable nights with Rowana. The nights of love and joy. He may have a bad case of Alzheimer's but he will never forget the nights he spent with the love of his life. He even thought that she was still alive, sitting in front of the window and checking her plants one by one.
"Mr?"
Mr. Aloff shot back to reality, looked at the man, and nodded. "Ah, yes, yes. I love nights. I really love nights."
"Why?" asked the mysterious man.
"It was the part of my 24 hours when I have her in my arms ..." he replied, thinking of his wife, who was already resting in peace. "It's when I could hear her deep breath as I hugged her tightly and she fell asleep ...
The mysterious man nodded and keyed in all of the key words for Mr. Aloff's answer. After writing these sentences down, the man nodded to Mr. Aloff and waved him away. “Thank you, Mr. Aloff. Take care of yourself, ”he said with a strange aura around him. "... and be ready."
The other men in black suits worked on the other houses. They asked each household the same questions that Mr. Aloff had answered.
A 34-year-old Sarah smiled at one of the men in black suits and replied confidently. "Of course, night. Because then I let my feet rest. As you know, my job is a teacher, all I did was teach the boys while I stand on my feet. It's my rest time, that's why I love nights. "
Another middle-aged man was asked and he replied, "Oh yes. I prefer nights to days. The days are tiring and suffocating, just like today it's too hot. I can't stand it. The air was cool and calm. Then who would hate the night? "
A girl in Gothic fashion answered the same questions as: "I love dark. I love black. I love my comfort zone and this comfort zone only exists at night when I amI'm all alone in my room So yes, I will choose night as day. "
Most of the people in town loved the darkness of the night. The most common reason given was: It's the time when they take a comforting rest after a long, hard day. It was acceptable reason to know that most jobs were early shifts.
Everyone even asked something. They wanted the whole 24 hours to be night. Cool air. They go to their mattresses to rest. Dark but reassuring. The time for family reunions after everyday work and school. Other reasons and the only option they chose was the night.
It was acceptable.
Too acceptable because it put a grin on someone's face when 'they' scrolled down the responses of everyone who took the survey.
Night. Night. Night. Night.
No other answers, just night.
"Good thing", the Supremo muttered as he swayed his swivel chair left and right. "They preferred nights. I think I really need to publish my plans as soon as possible."
He hit the intercom with a smile before speaking. "The day comes? You heard me let's change it from a question to a statement.
"What?"
Supremo laughed. "Shut up, I'm just too excited. Are the panels okay now?"
“Yes, Supremo,” replies the man on the other line. "When are you going to-"
"Shhh ..." Supremo grinned as he scrolled down the screen again, where the polls blinked. "The time will come. You will see, Madrico. You will see.
Supremo heard a sigh on the other line. “You know how dangerous that will be. Are you really -"
"Why do you doubt, if I, the boss, don't think about it at first? Are you stupid?" Supremo snapped. “Anyway, just wait for my signal. I'm waiting for this one person to answer the survey questions and see. "
"Do you think the whole action depends on his answer?" asked Madrid.
“No, of course,” said Supremo. “But kind of, yes - I think so, but I know what his answers will be. Knowing he's a night owl. Then there is no doubt.
